LAGOS - 19 JAN - A petrol tanker truck exploded after flipping over in central Nigeria on Saturday, killing 70 people who had gathered to collect the spilled fuel, as reported by the national road safety authority. Kumar Tsukwam, head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed the death toll, stating that the accident occurred around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) at the Dikko junction, which connects Abuja, the federal capital, to the northern city of Kaduna. The truck, which was carrying 60,000 liters of gasoline, crashed, and most of the victims were burned beyond recognition. Emergency crews are currently at the scene to manage the situation.

The explosion comes amid a severe economic crisis in Nigeria, where gasoline prices have risen significantly, prompting many to risk their lives to gather fuel from accident sites. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago expressed his sorrow, calling the incident "worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate," and reported that several others suffered varying degrees of burns. This tragedy follows a similar incident in October, where over 170 people lost their lives in Jigawa State.
