SINGAPORE - 22 NOV - AirAsia aims to establish low-cost hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, mirroring Dubai’s success in connecting global travelers. Founder Tony Fernandes envisions leveraging these hubs for flights lasting between 1½ to six hours, offering affordable connectivity within Asia and beyond. Despite the challenges faced during the pandemic, including debt restructuring and workforce downsizing, the carrier has rebounded, rehiring 2,600 staff and expanding its network, including a recent venture into Africa.

Fernandes forecasts a full recovery by 2025 and sees 2026 as a “golden year” for the industry, fueled by rising intra-Asia travel amid geopolitical uncertainties. AirAsia plans to grow further by tapping into secondary cities, like connecting Chiang Mai to China, and utilizing available aircraft despite global supply chain issues. The carrier remains optimistic about its future and aims to capitalize on shifting travel trends and emerging markets.

Tony Fernandes, the founder of Airasia, stated that the low-cost airline currently has 23,000 workers after rehiring all 2,600 workers it let go during the pandemic.
