LONDON, March 1 — Marco Asensio’s brace secured Aston Villa’s spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Cardiff at Villa Park.

Unai Emery’s side struggled to break down the Championship team until the 68th minute when Marcus Rashford set up Asensio for the opener. The Spaniard sealed the victory in the 80th minute, guiding Leon Bailey’s pass past Cardiff keeper Ethan Horvath.

Asensio, on loan from PSG, has now scored four goals in six games for Villa. The win was a much-needed boost after their 4-1 Premier League loss to Crystal Palace.

“We needed Asensio. We were creating chances but not clinical,” Emery said. “Playing against a Championship team is not easy.”
