BAMAKO, Feb 16 – At least 48 people were killed when an illegally operated gold mine collapsed in western Mali yesterday, authorities confirmed.

Mali, one of Africa’s top gold producers, frequently sees fatal landslides and accidents at mining sites due to unregulated operations. Authorities continue to struggle with controlling illegal mining in the impoverished nation.

“The death toll as of 6 PM today stands at 48,” a police source reported, adding that some victims fell into water, including a woman carrying her baby.

Both a local official and the Kenieba gold miners' association confirmed the toll, while rescue efforts were still ongoing, according to an environmental group leader.

The collapse occurred at an abandoned site previously operated by a Chinese company, sources said.

This tragedy follows a January landslide in southern Mali that killed at least 10 people, mostly women. Just over a year ago, a tunnel collapse in the same region claimed more than 70 lives.
