MELBOURNE, March 14 — Lando Norris set the fastest time in the first practice session of the Australian Grand Prix, edging out Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, while Max Verstappen finished fifth.

Norris clocked 1:17.252 on soft tyres at Albert Park, just ahead of Sainz in a session red-flagged twice. The second stoppage came when Haas rookie Ollie Bearman crashed into the barriers, losing his rear right wheel. He escaped uninjured.

Verstappen, aiming for a second Australian GP win, was 0.444 seconds off the pace, admitting Red Bull is "not the quickest at the moment." Liam Lawson, replacing Sergio Perez, struggled and finished 16th after brushing the wall.

Lewis Hamilton, making his Ferrari debut, finished 12th, warning of an adjustment period after switching from Mercedes. His former team saw George Russell finish seventh, while Kimi Antonelli placed 14th.

The session saw Sainz briefly lead before Norris stole the top spot in the final minute. McLaren, last year’s constructors’ champion, looks strong heading into the season opener. — AFP
