LOS ANGELES - 10 JAN -  Explosions from gas canisters and towering flames drove Kevin Williams and his family to flee their Altadena home as wildfires ravaged areas near Los Angeles. “It sounded like a warzone,” said Williams, recounting how two powerful blasts shook the ground, prompting him to evacuate with his wife, son, and two dogs. The fires, which destroyed hundreds of buildings and forced over 70,000 people to flee, have consumed more than 22,000 acres across the Pacific Palisades and Eaton Canyon.

Survivors sheltered at evacuation centers, grappling with fear and uncertainty. Many, like retiree Frances Colella, fled multiple times, escaping homes only to face encroaching flames again. Others, including disabled resident Thomas Hutchinson, narrowly escaped thanks to emergency responders. “I don’t go anywhere without Rusty,” Hutchinson said of his dog, whom he refused to leave behind. As wildfires continue to spread, residents remain unsure whether their homes will survive the devastation.

Firefighters work to contain the Palisades fire as it rages amid a windstorm on Los Angeles' westside, January 8, 2025.
