ROME, Feb 24 — An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome following an "alleged bomb scare," an Italian airport spokesperson confirmed.

The flight, carrying 199 passengers and crew, was escorted by two Italian fighter jets before landing safely at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO). American Airlines cited a "possible security concern" but provided no further details. Law enforcement inspected the aircraft and cleared it for re-departure.

Passenger Mahesh Kumar, an IT consultant, described tense moments onboard. “The pilot announced the diversion due to security reasons. Everyone remained quiet and followed instructions as fighter jets escorted us,” he told AFP. Upon landing, Italian authorities conducted security screenings.

The flight, which departed from New York’s JFK Airport, sharply turned back over the Caspian Sea, according to FlightAware. American Airlines later clarified that the landing in Rome was required under Indian security protocols, despite the threat being deemed non-credible.
