BELGRADE - 21 JAN -A devastating fire broke out early Monday at a retirement home in Barajevo, on the outskirts of Belgrade, killing eight people and injuring seven others. The blaze, which started at 3:30 am local time, engulfed the facility with approximately 30 residents inside. Initial findings suggest the fire may have been started by a resident who also perished in the incident. Prosecutors have confirmed an ongoing investigation and detained three individuals on suspicion of violating safety regulations, which could result in prison sentences of up to 10 years if convicted.

Emergency crews managed to extinguish the fire and evacuate 13 residents, despite the remote location of the facility. The injured have been hospitalized in Belgrade, with three in critical condition and others being treated for smoke inhalation. Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic announced a national day of mourning on Wednesday to honor the victims, while Labour Minister Nemanja Starovic praised the quick response of fire teams, which prevented further loss of life.
