GOLD COAST, March 10 — Heavy rain from ex-Cyclone Alfred has flooded large areas of Australia’s east coast, leaving over 200,000 homes and businesses without power.

Despite weakening, the system continues to bring extreme weather, prompting flood warnings across a 400km stretch of Queensland and New South Wales. Brisbane saw 30cm of rain in 24 hours, submerging streets and vehicles. Emergency teams rescued 17 people from fast-moving waters overnight.

Authorities warn of further flash floods and river surges. Repair crews are working to restore power, clearing fallen trees and damaged lines. In New South Wales, evacuation orders have mostly been lifted, but officials remain cautious.

The disaster has claimed one life—a 61-year-old man was swept away in northern NSW. Additionally, 13 soldiers were injured when their trucks rolled over while clearing roads near Lismore. One remains in hospital in stable condition.
