BESANÇON (France), Feb 14 — Former French Tennis Federation Vice-President Jean-Pierre Dartevelle has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a former player nearly 50 years younger than him.

The victim, now 25, was between 17 and 19 years old when the assaults took place from September 2016 to March 2018. During the trial, Attorney General François Prelot noted that Dartevelle showed no remorse, while the victim’s parents had hoped for an admission of guilt and an apology.

Dartevelle denied the allegations, claiming the victim lied and portraying himself as a victim of false accusations. He described their relationship as a "magnificent love story," while the victim testified that she was coerced and subjected to manipulation.

She recounted being trapped in an 18-month abusive relationship, during which she struggled with fear and shame. Following injuries that ended her career, she underwent leg surgery, but her condition worsened. She later suffered from anorexia, bulimia, and depression, leading to a suicide attempt.

The victim explained that she initially met Dartevelle after he offered to help her with her career. However, their first meeting resulted in rape. — AFP
