MANILA, March 11 – Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested today at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for crimes against humanity linked to his war on drugs.

Manila-based Rappler confirmed the arrest through high-ranking and security sources. The ICC alleges Duterte's anti-drug campaign led to nearly 30,000 deaths, with human rights groups accusing police of extrajudicial killings. An Interpol Red Notice preceded his detention.

Duterte had just returned from Hong Kong, where he attended an event with overseas Filipino workers. Speculation about an ICC warrant had surfaced before his trip.

Although President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration did not directly cooperate with the ICC, it honored commitments to Interpol, enabling the arrest.

The ICC has been investigating Duterte’s actions since his presidency and tenure as Davao City mayor. While he withdrew the Philippines from the ICC, the Marcos administration has not ruled out handing him over.

Duterte is the first former Philippine leader arrested under an international tribunal’s order. Other world leaders with active ICC warrants, like Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu, remain at large.
