KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Two foreign nationals have become the first individuals in Malaysia to be charged in court for littering under the newly enforced anti-littering law, according to a report by The Star.
BANGKOK, June 26 — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo showcased Malaysia’s efforts in promoting responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance and enhancing regional collaboration at the 3rd Unesco Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (GFEAI 2025) on Wednesday.
Speaking during a high-level ministerial panel titled Fostering Global Dialogue on AI for a Collective Future, Gobind reaffirmed Malaysia’s dedication to fostering ethical AI practices, advancing regional partnerships, and ensuring the country’s development adheres to internationally recognised standards.
“As AI continues to evolve, meaningful dialogue and international cooperation are essential for building a future that is inclusive, secure, and beneficial to all,” he said.
Earlier, Gobind joined a panel discussion titled From Readiness Assessment to Enhanced Institutional, Technical and Human Capacities in AI, where he outlined Malaysia’s progress — including expanding national connectivity, implementing a multi-pronged approach to infrastructure, talent, and trust, and introducing data centre regulations to establish Malaysia as a regional data infrastructure hub.
“I’m confident that many more significant achievements lie ahead. However, I strongly believe that our next phase of growth must be guided by robust, forward-looking policies and regulations,” he said. “At the Ministry of Digital, our commitment to this mission is unwavering. We will continue to pursue a digital future that is inclusive, secure, and sustainable.”
Later in the day, Gobind held bilateral talks with Thailand’s Minister of Digital Economy and Society — and Deputy Prime Minister — Prasert Jantararuangtong.
He said their discussion focused on expanding regional cooperation in digital technology and AI, particularly in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, and transport.
“Building on the relationship first established during ADGMIN, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to Asean collaboration in digital technologies and AI,” Gobind said. “As Malaysia prepares to chair Asean in 2025, I extended invitations to the upcoming Asean AI Summit in August and the SMART City Expo in September, both to be held in Kuala Lumpur.”
He added that both ministers also discussed the pressing need for joint action on cybersecurity in an increasingly AI-driven digital environment. — Bernama
