REYKJAVIK - 22 NOV - The Sundhnukagigar volcanic fissure near Grindavik, a fishing village on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, erupted last night, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) reported. Though no infrastructure is currently at risk, Grindavik, known for its Blue Lagoon hot spa, was evacuated. Images showed red-orange lava flowing from the fissure, though the eruption is smaller and slower than the one in August.

Volcanic activity in the region began in 2021 after eight centuries of dormancy, with experts warning it has entered a new active phase. Most of Grindavik's 4,000 residents were evacuated last year, selling their homes to the state. Currently, about 50 houses remain occupied, but ongoing eruptions and heightened seismic activity pose continuous challenges.
