LOS ANGELES 17 JAN - Improved weather conditions in Los Angeles have given firefighters a much-needed break as they continue battling two major wildfires. Red flag warnings expired in most areas, except for regions east of the city where strong winds and dry conditions persist. However, the national weather service predicts that a shift to onshore winds and higher humidity could help mitigate the wildfire threat temporarily.

The fires have devastated an area nearly the size of Washington, DC, claiming 25 lives and destroying over 12,000 homes and structures. Thousands remain under evacuation orders, while 8,500 firefighters, supported by air tankers and helicopters, work tirelessly to contain the blazes. Despite some progress, authorities warn that fire risks could rise again by Sunday, with the likelihood of renewed red flag warnings.

The fires have damaged or destroyed more than 12,000 homes and other structures.
