JAKARTA, Feb 4 — Indonesian police arrested 56 men at a "gay sex party" in South Jakarta, with three facing up to 15 years in prison under the country's pornography laws, officials confirmed.

The arrests took place on Saturday at a hotel in South Jakarta, where police claim a same-sex party was being held. According to police spokesperson Ade Ary Syam Indradi, the three suspects were identified as event organizers and are being investigated for facilitating pornography services, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Although homosexuality is not illegal in most parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta, it remains a taboo subject in the Muslim-majority country. Police reported finding condoms and HIV medications at the event.

Activist shave long criticized Indonesia’s anti-pornography laws, saying they are often misused against LGBTQ+ communities. In 2017, hundreds were arrested in similar raids on clubs, hotels, and spas, with Amnesty International warning of an increasingly hostile environment for the gay community.
