IPOH, April 17 — Perak led the country in inland fisheries production in 2024, recording 2,987 metric tonnes and contributing 35 per cent of Malaysia’s total 9,652 metric tonnes.

State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said the achievement reflects ongoing state efforts to strengthen the sector.

He said 1,893 licensed inland fishermen were registered with the Perak Fisheries Department last year, with many receiving welfare and economic support.

“These fishermen are key assets and receive assistance including a RM200 monthly living allowance, benefiting 645 individuals with RM1.548 million allocated this year, a programme which will continue in 2026,” he said at the state assembly sitting.

He added that 23 fish stocking programmes involving 2.4 million fry were carried out last year to support conservation and sustain fish populations.

The state is also focusing on skills training and value-added initiatives to improve fishermen’s income and industry stability. — Bernama
