TURIN, Feb 12 — Samuel Mbangula’s late strike secured Juventus a crucial 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League playoff, boosting their chances of reaching the last 16.

The 21-year-old winger sealed the victory at the Allianz Stadium with a goal in the 82nd minute, giving Juve an edge ahead of next week’s second-leg clash in the Netherlands. His effort restored the lead after Ivan Perisic, a former Inter Milan star, had canceled out Weston McKennie’s powerful first-half opener with a stunning goal in the 56th minute.

Juventus started strong, dominating possession, with McKennie’s thunderous 34th-minute strike coming after PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez made key saves from Timothy Weah, Nicolas Gonzalez, and Randal Kolo Muani. However, PSV had their moments, with Ismael Saibari and Ryan Flamingo missing early chances.

Perisic’s equalizer momentarily silenced the home crowd, but Mbangula’s first-ever goal in Europe’s top club competition ensured Juve head to the Philips Stadion with the upper hand. A win would set up a last-16 clash against either Inter Milan or Arsenal. — AFP
