PARIS, July 5 — A man climbed the Eiffel Tower today and hung a US flag on the landmark to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, police said.

The man was seen in the afternoon scaling the structure between the second and third levels before displaying the Stars and Stripes.

He was subsequently arrested, while the forecourt and the second and third floors of the tower were temporarily evacuated.

Authorities said the climber did not provide any explanation for his actions.

The tower, which attracts around seven million visitors annually, was completed in 1889 for the Paris World’s Fair and designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel. Known as the “Iron Lady,” it remains one of the most iconic symbols of Paris. — AFP
