MCMC: One to be prosecuted, five fined over false petrol price hike claims

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received a decision from the Attorney General’s Chambers on its investigation into the გავრცელ of false claims about a fuel price hike linked to the West Asia crisis.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received a decision from the Attorney General’s Chambers on its investigation into the გავრცელ of false claims about a fuel price hike linked to the West Asia crisis.

In a statement today, MCMC said one individual will be charged at the Sepang Sessions Court, while five others have been issued compounds and four more given warning letters.

The commission added that compound offers of RM25,000 each have been issued to the five individuals involved.

“All actions were taken following investigations under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both upon conviction.

“The public is urged to use digital platforms responsibly and refrain from spreading content that could disrupt public order and harmony,” the statement said. — Bernama
