MIAMI, April 5 — Lionel Messi celebrated the debut of Inter Miami’s new stadium with a goal as the MLS champions played to a 2-2 draw against Austin FC.

The 26,000-capacity Nu Stadium, marking the end of more than a decade-long search for a permanent home, was packed with fans, including Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.

“To see this stadium come to life after years of effort is incredibly special,” Beckham said before kickoff. “I came to MLS 20 years ago and made many promises. Thirteen years ago, I promised again about coming to Miami. Today, it’s a dream come true.”

The match began in a festive mood with Beckham joining billionaire Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas in a pre-game ribbon-cutting ceremony. However, Austin FC quickly stole the spotlight, taking the lead in the sixth minute when Guilherme Biro scored from a Facundo Torres corner.

Messi responded swiftly, heading in a cross from right-back Ian Fray to level the score at 1-1. Inter Miami dominated possession and created several chances, with Mateo Silvetti coming close twice in the first half.

Austin regained the lead in the 53rd minute after Messi was dispossessed; Joseph Rosales set up Myrto Uzuni, who assisted substitute Jayden Nelson for a clean finish.

Inter Miami pressed for an equalizer, and coach Javier Mascherano introduced veteran striker Luis Suarez in the 73rd minute. Suarez scored eight minutes later, converting a Messi corner that was flicked on by German Berterame to make it 2-2.
