TERNATE – 15 JAN — Thousands of residents are being evacuated following the eruption of Mount Ibu in eastern Indonesia, which sent a towering plume of smoke and ash four kilometers into the sky, officials announced today.

The volcano, located on Halmahera island, erupted for the fifth time this year, prompting authorities to raise its alert status to the highest level. Around 3,000 residents from five nearby villages are set to be relocated as a precaution. Mount Ibu has shown heightened activity since last June, with four eruptions already recorded in January.

A woman and child look on as volcanic ash rises into the sky during Mount Ibu's eruption, seen from Duo no Village in West Halmahera, North Maluku province.
