JERUSALEM, Feb 22 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Hamas of killing two Israeli children in Gaza and vowed retaliation after the group failed to return their mother, Shiri Bibas, citing a possible mix-up of bodies.

Israeli military officials claimed the Bibas boys were killed “with bare hands” by Palestinian militants, contradicting Hamas’s claim that an Israeli airstrike caused their deaths. Meanwhile, the Bibas family blamed Netanyahu for failing to secure their release, saying there would be “no forgiveness” for their abandonment.

Hamas initially returned four bodies, including what was believed to be Shiri Bibas, but forensic analysis revealed it was a different individual. Netanyahu accused Hamas of deception, while the group admitted a possible mistake due to Israeli bombing.

Despite the dispute, the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners is set to continue under the ongoing ceasefire. Six Israeli hostages are expected to be freed today in exchange for 602 Palestinian prisoners.

The conflict has resulted in over 48,000 deaths in Gaza, according to the local health ministry, while Hamas’s October 2023 attack killed over 1,200 Israelis. Talks for a more permanent ceasefire are expected to resume soon, amid ongoing violence in the West Bank. — AFP
