WASHINGTON, April 27 — A man accused of targeting US administration officials at a Washington event has been arrested after allegedly opening fire, injuring a Secret Service agent.
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — The upcoming implementation of a new electricity tariff structure on July 1 marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing energy sector reforms, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, who also serves as the spokesperson for the Madani Government, said the revised tariff aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which targets increased use of renewable energy and reduced carbon emissions by 2050.
“Starting July 1, 2025, about 85% of domestic electricity users are expected to enjoy either unchanged or lower electricity bills—so long as their monthly consumption remains under 1,000 kilowatt hours,” he explained.
He said this initiative is part of coordinated reform efforts involving the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), the Energy Commission (ST), and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), highlighting that meaningful reforms can still benefit the public directly.
Fahmi shared these remarks at the Kita Madani Carnival for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, held at IWK Eco Park in Pantai Dalam. Also present at the event was Information Department director-general Julina Johan.
On Friday, the Energy Commission announced that more than 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will benefit from a fairer, more progressive tariff structure under the new schedule approved by the government.
In a statement, the commission said the new tariffs—effective from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027—fall under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework and are in accordance with Section 26 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
The revised tariffs under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4) include changes to three key components: the average base tariff rate, a new tariff schedule, and the fuel cost adjustment mechanism.
The average base tariff for RP4 has been set at 45.40 sen/kWh, slightly lower than the 45.62 sen/kWh approved in December 2024. This reflects a reduction of up to 19% compared to the previous RP3 period.
Earlier, Fahmi, who is also the MP for Lembah Pantai, officiated the Kita Madani Carnival—an outreach event designed to connect the public with government services through engaging and informative programmes that reflect the Malaysia Madani concept.
Activities at the carnival included Rahmah Madani and Agro Madani sales, children’s sports contests, and exhibitions by 21 government agencies, featuring services such as traffic summons payment and driving licence renewal. — Bernama
