WASHINGTON, July 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit the White House next week for talks with President Donald Trump, as the U.S. intensifies efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, a U.S. official confirmed on Monday.
NEW YORK, Feb 14 — Manhattan’s acting US attorney, Danielle Sassoon, resigned yesterday after the Justice Department ordered her to drop corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
Sassoon, 38, was appointed interim US attorney by former President Donald Trump’s administration. Her resignation comes three days after acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, a former Trump lawyer, instructed Manhattan prosecutors to dismiss the case against Adams, a Democrat.
The New York Times reported that two senior members of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section also resigned following the directive. In a letter, Bove accused Sassoon of pursuing a "politically motivated prosecution" and disregarding instructions from a democratically elected administration.
Adams, the first sitting New York mayor to be criminally indicted, pleaded not guilty to fraud and bribery charges last September. He has claimed the case was politically motivated, suggesting he was targeted for criticizing then-President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.
Sassoon, in her resignation letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, stated that dropping the case conflicted with her duty to prosecute crimes "without fear or favor." A Yale Law School graduate and member of the conservative Federalist Society, she previously led the high-profile prosecution of crypto tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried.
The Justice Department has undergone a major shakeup under Trump’s administration, with several top officials reassigned or dismissed, including members of special counsel Jack Smith’s office, which handled criminal cases against Trump. — AFP
