LONDON, March 11 — Newcastle United revived their Champions League push with a controversial 1-0 victory over West Ham, courtesy of Bruno Guimaraes’ second-half strike.

West Ham protested a foul in the build-up, but VAR did not intervene. The win lifts Eddie Howe’s side to sixth in the Premier League, level with Manchester City and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. A top-four finish guarantees Champions League qualification, while fifth place might also suffice depending on other English clubs' European campaigns.

Newcastle’s victory comes at a crucial time, ending a poor run ahead of their League Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday. The Magpies seek their first major trophy since 1969.

West Ham had an early chance, but Tomas Soucek missed from close range. Despite missing key players, Newcastle grew into the game, with Harvey Barnes testing goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when Barnes’ cross found Guimaraes, who poked home.

West Ham felt Alexander Isak pushed Max Kilman before the goal, but their protests were ignored. The hosts’ frustration deepened as VAR dismissed late penalty appeals.
