GRIMSBY, March 11 — A cargo ship collided with the US-military chartered tanker Stena Immaculate in the North Sea, sparking fears of toxic hazards. One crew member from the Solong remains missing, while 13 others were rescued. All Stena Immaculate crew members are safe.

The collision, which occurred 16 km off the English coast near Hull, ruptured the tanker’s hull, releasing jet fuel and causing fires on both vessels. The Stena Immaculate carried 220,000 barrels of jet fuel, while the Solong had 15 containers of sodium cyanide. Experts warn of potential harm to marine life, though the fuel is expected to evaporate quickly.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office called the situation “extremely concerning.” Rescue operations, including helicopters and lifeboats, are ongoing. Humber estuary vessel movements are suspended, and Germany has dispatched an emergency response ship.

Collisions in the North Sea are rare, with the last major one in October 2023 resulting in fatalities. Investigations into the cause are underway. — AFP
