NEW YORK, May 23 — The Trump administration yesterday revoked Harvard University’s authorization to enroll foreign students—who make up over a quarter of its student body—in a sharp escalation of the president’s conflict with the prestigious institution.
MANILA, May 22 — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos today requested the resignation of around 30 cabinet secretaries in what he described as a “bold reset,” following his party’s underwhelming performance in the recent mid-term elections.
As of this morning, three cabinet members—Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., and Finance Secretary Ralph Recto—had stepped down, with Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman also announcing plans to resign.
The mid-term elections, widely seen as a referendum on Marcos’ administration, resulted in only six of the 11 Senate candidates he endorsed winning seats. The newly elected senators will join the existing 12 in deciding the impeachment fate of Vice President Sara Duterte, a political rival who could be permanently barred from holding public office if convicted.
According to a statement from the Presidential Communications Office, the mass resignation move is intended to give Marcos the opportunity to assess the performance of each department and decide which officials align with his administration’s revised priorities.
“This isn’t about personalities — it’s about performance, alignment, and urgency,” Marcos said, emphasizing that those who have delivered results will be recognized, but there is no room for complacency.
The presidential palace assured that public services would remain uninterrupted during the transition, and the appointment of new cabinet members would be guided by stability and meritocracy. — AFP
