SYDNEY, March 12 — A surfer in his 30s was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing at Wharton Beach, about 90km east of Esperance, Western Australia.

Police confirmed the man was “taken by a shark” after a search recovered his surfboard bearing bite marks but failed to find his body. The search has now shifted to a recovery mission.

This marks Australia's fourth fatal shark attack in recent months. In February, a 17-year-old girl was killed while swimming off an eastern island, and in January, a 28-year-old surfer died in South Australia.

In December, a 40-year-old pastor was fatally bitten while spearfishing in Queensland. — AFP
