MANILA, Feb 7 — Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte, daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, soared to victory in the 2022 elections alongside Ferdinand Marcos Jr., cementing a powerful alliance between two political dynasties. Just three years later, that partnership lies in ruins as she now faces impeachment over allegations of fraud, corruption, and a plot to assassinate Marcos.

A former lawyer and mother of three, Duterte first caught the nation’s attention in 2011 when, as mayor of Davao, she punched a sheriff on camera for ignoring her request to delay a slum demolition. Dubbed “Inday Sara,” she built an image as a champion of the poor.

However, tensions with Marcos surfaced soon after their election win. Duterte’s resignation as education secretary in 2024 coincided with a House investigation into her spending, followed by incendiary allegations of an assassination plan. Now, with a Senate trial looming, Duterte’s once-bright political future is at risk—though she has hinted at a possible presidential run in 2028, provided she can overcome the charges.

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte, known as Inday Sara, is the eldest daughter of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, Reuters reports.
