TAIWAN - 16 JAN -TheTaiwan High Court Kaohsiung Branch has upheld the death sentence of LiangYu-chih, who was convicted of the brutal rape and murder of a Malaysian student in 2020. The court cited his clear intent to kill, the extreme cruelty of his actions, and the significant risk of reoffending as key factors in the decision. Liang abducted the 24-year-old student near her school in Tainan, subjected her to rape, severe beatings, and strangulation, then stole her belongings before discarding her body in a remote mountainous area. His actions were premeditated, involving the use of a prepared rope to strangle the victim with force, resulting in fatal injuries.

Liang was initially sentenced to death in March 2022 by the Taiwan Ciaotou District Court for the charges of rape, intentional murder, and robbery. His appeal was dismissed by the Supreme Court in June 2023, but a retrial was ordered for the murder charges due to procedural flaws. In the retrial, the High Court reaffirmed the death sentence, marking it as the first such verdict after Taiwan's Constitutional Court ruling in 2024, which specified that capital punishment is only applicable in the most serious cases.

The court upheld the sentence citing Liang Yu-chih's intent to kill, the brutality of his actions, and the significant risk of him reoffending, according to anews statement.
