LONDON, Feb 25, 2025 — Leeds United extended their lead at the top of the Championship with a dramatic 3-1 comeback win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Late goals from Japan’s Ao Tanaka and Dutch forward Joel Piroe secured victory, leaving Leeds five points clear in the race for Premier League promotion.

Sheffield United took an early lead in the 14th minute after a nightmare sequence from Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who fumbled multiple crosses before eventually deflecting a rebound into his own net. The Blades held their advantage until the 72nd minute when Junior Firpo headed in an equalizer from Dan James’s cross.

Leeds pushed forward, and Tanaka completed the turnaround in the 88th minute with a precise header into the top corner. Piroe sealed the win two minutes later with a powerful strike, sparking celebrations among the traveling fans.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team’s resilience, calling it a "priceless three points," despite serving a touchline ban. Blades boss Chris Wilder admitted his side was outclassed in the final minutes, acknowledging Leeds' quality.

With 12 games remaining, Leeds now sit seven points ahead of third-placed Burnley, while Sheffield United’s loss leaves them just two points above the playoff zone. — AFP
