MANILA, April 17 — Philippine security forces killed 10 alleged Islamist militants today after they resisted arrest in a clash in the country’s south, police said.
CHUKAI, April 17 — The Terengganu government has instructed the Department of Environment (DOE) to take firm action after a vessel was identified as the suspected source of a three-kilometre oil spill at Pantai Teluk Kalong.
State Tourism, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman Datuk Razali Idris said the incident, which has affected the popular beach since Monday, is a serious offence that must not be compromised.
He said authorities should impose maximum penalties, including fines or even seizure of the vessel if necessary.
The DOE has reportedly identified one of 20 ships docked at the Kemaman Supply Base as the likely source, believed to have released oil residue during maintenance work. Samples have been sent for laboratory analysis to support investigations.
Cleanup operations by the Kemaman Municipal Council have begun and will continue until all oil residue is removed. Authorities earlier reported sightings of dead marine life following the spill. — Bernama
