BANGKOK, Feb 15 — Thailand has deported 10 Chinese nationals accused of involvement in the kidnapping of actor Wang Xing, who was rescued from a cyber-fraud centre in Myanmar, Thai police confirmed on Saturday.

The suspects were part of a fraud syndicate operating in Myawaddy, Myanmar, targeting Chinese citizens through scams. They were deported to China on Friday evening, escorted by Thai immigration police from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Authorities said the group played various roles in the scam, including management, security, and call centre operations designed to deceive victims.

Actor Wang Xing was allegedly lured to Thailand under the pretense of an audition, only to be smuggled into Myanmar. His January rescue shed light on growing concerns over cyber-fraud compounds in Myanmar’s borderlands, where trafficked individuals are forced into online scams.

Following Wang’s rescue, the gang attempted to flee to Cambodia but was arrested in Thailand, according to Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, a senior officer leading anti-human trafficking efforts.

Thai police have vowed to intensify investigations into fraud-linked assets and work with the anti-money laundering agency to curb call centre scams.  — AFP
