WASHINGTON, March 1 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that boxes of classified documents seized by the FBI from his Mar-a-Lago estate have been returned by the Justice Department, now led by his appointees.

Trump, who had faced charges for improperly taking top-secret documents after leaving the White House, shared on Truth Social that the department "just returned the boxes that Deranged Jack Smith made such a big deal about." He stated the documents are being transported to Florida and will eventually be displayed in his presidential library.

The FBI had raided Mar-a-Lago in 2022 to retrieve classified materials, including records from the Pentagon and CIA, which had been stored in unsecured locations. The case, led by special counsel Jack Smith, accused Trump of obstructing efforts to recover the documents.

After Trump regained the presidency on January 20, Smith dropped the case nine days later, citing Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president. He later resigned.
