WASHINGTON, March 13 — President Donald Trump said he believes Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei — whose father, the former supreme leader, was killed on the first day of the US and Israel’s attacks on Iran — is still alive, though “damaged.”

Khamenei has not been seen publicly by Iranians since his selection on Sunday by a clerical assembly, and his initial remarks were read aloud by a television presenter yesterday. An Iranian official told Reuters on Wednesday that the new supreme leader sustained light injuries but continues to carry out his duties, following state television reports describing him as war-wounded.

“I think he probably is alive. I think he is damaged, but I think he’s probably alive in some form, you know,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News’ The Brian Kilmeade Show, with his comments published by Fox News late yesterday.

In his first public statements, Khamenei pledged to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed and urged neighbouring countries to shut US bases on their territory, warning that Iran would target them if they did not comply.

The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, prompting Iran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and Gulf countries hosting US bases.

As the conflict nears its two-week mark, which has already caused thousands of deaths and disrupted financial markets, the leaders of Iran, Israel, and the United States have all reaffirmed their determination to continue fighting. — Reuters
