LONDON, Feb 2 — The UK is set to become the first country to ban AI tools that generate child sexual abuse images, the government announced.

Under new laws, creating, distributing, or possessing AI-generated child abuse images will be punishable by up to five years in prison. It will also be illegal to own AI "paedophile manuals" that teach how to exploit AI for abuse, carrying a sentence of up to three years.

Interior Minister Yvette Cooper emphasized the importance of tackling online child abuse, stating, "Predators using AI to create abuse images will face severe consequences."

The legislation, part of the Crime and Policing Bill, will also target those running websites that enable child exploitation, with penalties of up to ten years in prison.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) reported a rise in AI-generated child abuse images, identifying 3,512 such images on a single dark web site in just 30 days. The most severe cases increased by 10% in a year.
