WASHINGTON, Feb 21 – US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will have “broad access” to eliminate programs from the previous administration at the Pentagon.

President Donald Trump, aiming to cut government spending, has empowered DOGE to restructure federal agencies. Hegseth confirmed in a video on X that the initiative will target redundancies and remove policies from former President Joe Biden’s tenure, including diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and climate change initiatives.

This unprecedented cost-cutting effort, led by Musk, has sparked concerns over conflicts of interest, as many affected agencies, including the Defense Department, regulate or engage with Musk’s business ventures.

Addressing media reports about major Pentagon budget cuts, Hegseth clarified that $50 billion would be redirected to Trump’s “America First” priorities. He emphasized shifting funds away from non-lethal, Biden-era programs to strengthen national defense.

“It’s about refocusing and reinvesting existing funds to build a force that protects the American people,” Hegseth stated. – AFP
