WASHINGTON, July 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit the White House next week for talks with President Donald Trump, as the U.S. intensifies efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, a U.S. official confirmed on Monday.
JERUSALEM, Feb 6 — War-displaced Palestinians returning to northern Gaza say they will never leave their land, despite US President Donald Trump’s recent proposal that they move to Jordan or Egypt. Trump also floated the idea of “long-term ownership” of Gaza by the United States and spoke of rebuilding it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Yet for many Gazans, memories of the “Nakba” (or catastrophe) in 1948—when Palestinians were displaced during Israel’s creation—remain vivid. “We only have one choice: to live or die here,” said 41-year-old Gaza City resident Ahmed Halasa, standing beside the rubble of a toppled building.
Heavy Israeli air strikes over the past 15 months left northern Gaza particularly devastated, and although water, electricity, and basic infrastructure are scarce, around 500,000 people have returned under a fragile truce. Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank echoed their sentiment, vowing to remain on their land regardless of any proposed relocation. — AFP
