MUNICH, Feb 16 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted that no decisions on ending Russia’s war should be made without Kyiv and Europe, as the United States moves to open talks with Moscow.

“No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, no decisions about Europe without Europe. Europe must have a seat at the table,” Zelensky told the Munich Security Conference.

His remarks come after US President Donald Trump agreed to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, catching Ukraine and its European allies off guard.

Zelensky urged Washington to establish a common strategy against Russia but indicated there was no joint stance after meeting US Vice President JD Vance.

“We cannot just agree to a ceasefire without real security guarantees, strong pressure on Russia, and a system to hold Moscow in check,” Zelensky warned.

He emphasized the need for tough sanctions on Russia and military reinforcements for Ukraine. He also said Kyiv was open to European peacekeeping troops but needed further discussions with European leaders.

Zelensky accused Putin of using Trump as a “prop in his own performance” and warned that Russia’s leader might attempt to invite him to Moscow for Russia’s WWII victory parade in May.

He also revealed ongoing talks with the US over a potential deal to exchange access to Ukraine’s rare earth deposits for security support.

In a broader message, Zelensky urged Europe to act independently, advocating for the creation of a European army to strengthen the continent’s defense against external threats.

“Europe must unite and act decisively, so that no one can ignore, dominate, or push it around,” he declared. — AFP
