The court announced in a statement that the 16-year-old defendant, identified by prosecutors as Mohammad A., was convicted of "preparing a serious act of violence that poses a threat to the state" and "aiding a terrorist act overseas."

He received a suspended sentence of 18 months.

Mohammad A., aged 14 during the attempted attack, had been "radicalised by IS propaganda on the internet," according to the court.

He was convicted of assisting another adolescent in Austria in orchestrating the heinous act.

"The court stated that the defendant provided him with a video containing instructions for constructing a bomb and facilitated his communication with a member of IS."

Mohammad A. provided a complete confession throughout the trial.

Austrian authorities have apprehended three individuals in connection with the foiled plot, which was disrupted with assistance from US intelligence — all of whom were teenagers at the time.

The primary suspect is an Austrian individual of North Macedonian descent who has admitted to having "planned to execute an attack utilizing explosives and knives," as reported by Austrian intelligence.

Authorities initially apprehended Mohammad A. in September of last year in the eastern city of Frankfurt an der Oder, where he was attending school at the age of 15.

Swift subsequently expressed on social media that "the cause of the cancellations instilled in me a renewed sense of fear, along with a significant amount of guilt, as many had intended to attend those performances." — AFP
