SYDNEY, Aug 3 — Victoria’s Premier has unveiled plans to make working from home a legal right, declaring it should be “a right, not a request.”

Speaking at the state Labor Party conference, Premier Jacinta Allan said the proposed law would give employees the right to work from home for at least two days a week, provided their job can reasonably be done remotely.

“We’re acting on the evidence — working from home increases productivity, saves families time and money,” Allan said.

The policy will now undergo consultation with unions, employers, and workers to refine the details.

Allan added that the change could save workers an estimated A$110 per week, reduce road congestion, and help more women remain in the workforce.

Remote work was a major issue during the national elections in May, with the opposition Liberal-National coalition’s proposal to scrap it contributing to their poor performance.

Victoria’s opposition leader, Brad Battin, acknowledged the benefits of remote work and expressed support for policies that enhance work-life balance.

The proposed legislation is expected to be tabled in the state parliament next year. — AFP
