TOKYO, Jan 22 — Japan has halted the restart of the world’s largest nuclear power plant just hours after it began, though the reactor remains “stable,” the operator said.
KUCHING, July 2 — The Sarawak government plans to offer scholarships for Sarawakians keen on pursuing careers in the security sector to study at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg announced.
According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Abang Johari said this initiative forms part of the state’s broader human capital development strategy.
“These students will be sent overseas to gain exposure to world-class security systems,” he said. “This isn’t about forming our own military, but about developing skilled individuals who can serve in various agencies, including the police, military, and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS).”
Speaking at the UPKS 8th anniversary dinner held at a leading hotel last night, Abang Johari highlighted that while security falls under the federal government's jurisdiction, Sarawak remains committed to supporting and enhancing the safety of its people and assets.
“We are not encroaching on federal authority, but complementing it by ensuring the people benefit from a more robust security framework,” he said, stressing the importance of coordination between state and federal security bodies.
He further added that the state is focused on empowering local youth to enter the fields of security, enforcement, and advanced technology to drive Sarawak’s progress toward developed state status.
“To become a modern and competitive state, we need a workforce that is highly trained, disciplined, and well-versed in the latest technologies. The younger generation must be equipped with modern theories and practices in security,” he noted.
During the event, the Sarawak Command Net (SCNet) was also officially launched. Abang Johari described SCNet as a key strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the state’s security infrastructure and improving tactical communication between UKPS and other enforcement bodies.
He said the SCNet system would significantly enhance coordination and operational efficiency among UKPS, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, and other agencies.
Also in attendance at the dinner were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and UPKS director Datuk Dr Chai Khin Chung. — The Borneo Post
