JAKARTA, July 20 — At least three people were killed and around 150 others rescued after a passenger ship caught fire off the coast of Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province on Sunday, according to Veri Ariyanto, a senior official with the provincial Search and Rescue Office.

“Three people died, and nearly 150 were safely rescued by a joint rescue team and local fishing boats,” he told Xinhua.

Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, with two ships, several rigid inflatable boats, and additional vessels deployed in the operation, Ariyanto added.

The vessel, identified as KM Barcelona 5, caught fire while sailing near Manado, the provincial capital, at approximately 1.00pm local time, said Dani Repi, head of the quick response team from the provincial Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency.

He noted that there were about 280 people on board at the time of the incident. — Bernama-Xinhua
