SYDNEY, July 30 — Australia will enforce landmark social media laws to prohibit children under 16 from accessing YouTube, citing the need to protect them from “predatory algorithms,” said Communications Minister Anika Wells.

“We want kids to know who they are before platforms assume who they are,” Wells stated, emphasizing that while social media has its place, targeting children with such algorithms does not.

The government had initially planned to exempt YouTube due to its educational use in classrooms but has now reversed that stance.

A YouTube spokesperson responded to the move, calling it a sharp reversal, reiterating the platform’s stance as a video-sharing service rather than a social media site. — AFP
