NIBONG TEBAL, Aug 16 — Police have arrested three men, including a Sri Lankan national, and dismantled a heroin processing laboratory belonging to a drug distribution syndicate during two raids in Bukit Tambun on Tuesday.

Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) district police chief Superintendent Jay January Siowou said a team from the Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department carried out the first raid at 4.29pm at a house in Taman Tambun Permai, arresting two local men and seizing 1,113g of heroin, 641g of heroin base, 4kg of caffeine, various chemicals and equipment believed to be used in drug processing.

In a second raid at another nearby house around 5.04pm, police detained a Sri Lankan man and confiscated 26kg of caffeine. The total value of drugs seized in both raids was RM74,500.

Initial investigations revealed that the first residence was being used as a heroin processing lab, with one of the local suspects serving as the mastermind with the technical knowledge to manufacture the drugs. The other two men functioned as assistants and couriers, and despite being unemployed, were believed to be living lavishly from the operation.

Jay added that the syndicate had been active since January, with the drugs produced intended for the local market. The two local suspects have prior criminal and drug-related records, while the Sri Lankan suspect has no previous record. The seized drugs are believed to be enough for 49,500 addicts.

Following the arrests, police also confiscated four vehicles — a Toyota Vellfire, a Honda Civic and two Yamaha LC135 motorcycles — valued at RM134,500. In total, the drugs and vehicles seized were worth RM209,000.

The three suspects have been remanded for seven days until August 19, and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama
