LONDON, June 3 — Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon in a deal valued at £18 million (RM103 million), the club announced on Monday.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Spanish club Las Palmas, who were relegated from La Liga, and will be eligible to feature for Chelsea in the upcoming Club World Cup later this month.

Essugo rose through the ranks of Sporting’s academy and made history in March 2021 by becoming the club’s youngest-ever first-team player at just 16 years old.

His move, along with that of Geovany Quenda, was agreed back in March. Quenda, however, will remain at Sporting until the end of the 2025/26 season before completing a £44 million transfer to Chelsea.

The Blues are also expected to strengthen their squad further in the coming days, with a £30 million deal for Ipswich striker Liam Delap reportedly nearing completion. — AFP
