BEIJING, Aug 6 — China has unveiled its latest gun-equipped quadruped military robots — dubbed “robot wolves” — which are built to stealthily approach enemies, fire accurate shots, and operate effectively in rugged terrain, according to state media.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that these new models are enhanced versions of previous robotic dogs, capable of replacing soldiers in high-risk environments to help reduce battlefield casualties.

Robotics has become a strategic priority for China, with some experts suggesting the country may already hold an edge over the United States in this field. The Chinese military has been eager to demonstrate its technological advancements — including these armed robodogs — during joint exercises with nations such as Cambodia.

In a CCTV video released on Wednesday, the latest version of the robot wolves is seen carrying rifles on their backs as they move through smoke-covered battle zones. Footage shows the robots navigating stairs, carrying heavy gear, and engaging dummy targets.

Although visually similar to earlier robodogs, CCTV said the “wolf” units boast upgraded “reconnaissance and strike capabilities.” They can traverse various terrains and carry out precise attacks from distances of up to 100 metres.

The robots are designed to mimic real wolf packs during combat, coordinating tasks and operating in unison. The leading unit, referred to as the “pack leader,” is tasked with collecting target data and relaying reconnaissance visuals, while others provide fire support or transport supplies and ammunition.

According to Chong Ja Ian, associate professor at the National University of Singapore, the deployment of such machines signals a shift toward more automated and lethal future battlefields. He added that China’s showcase is intended both to boost national pride and to send a message of deterrence to potential adversaries. — AFP
