BEIJING, June 23 — China has called on Iran and Israel to de-escalate their ongoing conflict to prevent the war from spilling over, as hostilities between the two nations continued into their 11th day.

“The Chinese side urges the parties to the conflict to prevent further escalation, firmly avoid the spillover of war, and return to the path of political resolution,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Monday.

Early Monday, aerial attacks intensified between Iran and Israel, with Tehran vowing to retaliate after U.S. warplanes deployed bunker-buster bombs on three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.

On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on China to help deter Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz — a key international trade passage — in response to the American strikes.

In response, Beijing emphasized the need for global efforts to contain the conflict, stressing the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf and nearby waters.

“These areas are vital international trade routes, and maintaining their security and stability serves the common interest of the international community,” Guo said.

He added, “China urges the international community to intensify efforts to de-escalate the conflict and prevent regional instability from causing broader impacts on the global economy.” — AFP
