BUDAPEST, July 31 —Ferrari has confirmed a multi-year contract extension with Formula One team principal Fred Vasseur, putting an end to speculation surrounding the Frenchman’s future with the team.

Vasseur, 57, took over the role at the start of 2023 and played a pivotal role in bringing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton over from Mercedes for the current season.

Earlier this year, Vasseur’s position had been under scrutiny amid rumours that Ferrari had approached Christian Horner, the former Red Bull team boss, who was dismissed this month and has not yet disclosed his next move.

“This announcement reflects our confidence in Fred’s leadership — a trust based on our shared ambitions, aligned expectations, and clear accountability,” said Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna in a statement released ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ferrari currently sits second in the constructors’ championship after 13 of 24 races, though they trail dominant leaders McLaren by a significant 268 points.

While Hamilton, the most decorated driver in Formula One history with 105 wins, has yet to reach the podium for Ferrari, he did secure victory in a sprint race in Shanghai in March.

Ferrari praised Vasseur’s composure under pressure and his ability to drive change within the team.

“I’m honoured by the continued trust Ferrari has placed in me. This extension isn’t just a vote of confidence — it’s a challenge to keep pushing forward, stay focused, and deliver results,” said Vasseur. “Over the past two and a half years, we’ve built strong foundations. Now we need to build on them with consistency and determination. We all understand the expectations and are fully committed to meeting them together.”

Hamilton also publicly backed Vasseur during the Canadian Grand Prix last month amid speculation about the team principal’s future.

“I love working with Fred. He’s the main reason I joined Ferrari, and I’m deeply grateful for that opportunity,” said the 40-year-old. “Things aren’t perfect, but I’m here to grow with the team — and with Fred. I believe he’s the right person to lead us to the top.”

Ferrari last clinched a championship title in 2008 — the same year Hamilton secured his first drivers’ title with McLaren. The most recent Ferrari driver’s champion was Kimi Räikkönen in 2007. — Reuters
