MOSCOW, April 20 — A 40cm tsunami wave has reached Japan’s Iwate prefecture following a powerful earthquake, according to NHK, as authorities assess the safety of nuclear facilities.
Japanese officials are inspecting nuclear power plants after the tremor, with Tohoku Electric Power checking the Onagawa plant in Miyagi for any irregularities.
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said inspections are also underway at the Fukushima-1 and Fukushima-2 plants to detect any potential issues.
Kyodo News reported that no abnormalities have been found so far at either Fukushima facility.
Earlier, the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Honshu, near Aomori and Iwate prefectures.
NHK also reported tsunami activity offshore, moving towards Iwate and Aomori.
The quake registered a maximum intensity of lower 6 on Japan’s seven-point seismic scale, prompting tsunami warnings along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido down to northern Honshu, including parts of eastern Japan. — Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti
